Before anyone gets excited, WinNT *can* eliminate DOS's 8.3 names on partitions formatted with their new filesystem. But you can't see them from DOS, of course, and the OS automatically munges the names for DOS-like applications even when running under WinNT. So your DOS or Win 3.1 apps do not magically start showing longer filenames, support for this must be considered when the application is written by the developer. And Chicago (Win 4)'s system has been reported as buggy by beta testers. I'm not even sure if it's WinNT compatible, it would certainly be like Microsoft to have some kind of interim solution. I think Chicago's system shows 256-char names, but actually stores them in a DOS-compatible partition, which is different than WinNT's advanced partitions.
