GNU (which stands for GNU's Not UNIX, really) is a broad collection of
public domain software controled by the Free Software Foundation at MIT.
Almost everything they have done is available on a wide range of machines.
EMACS (IMHO the best editor available) is their baby. Bison is GNU's
version of the UNIX version of YACC (the guy who came up with the name
should be shot). FLEX is their version of UNIX LEX. There are PC versions
of their software. Everything is distributed with the source code, and
according to the license, if you make improvements in the code, you must
distribute the new code to the world.
