Scott The PAR system consists of an ISA compression board, a dedicated IDE harddrive, and software. You can get an optional TBC card for rotoscoping. Files are rendered directly from 3DS in 24 or 32 bit or copied from the system harddrive into a proprietary jpg file. You then play the file at 30fps to VHS, SVHS, or Beta recorders. The software allows some simple cuts and joins but is not editing software. There may be a more complete description of the technical specs on the forum or someone from DPS is usually on the forum and can fill you in. Subjectively, the PAR is great for the price. It's around $1895 for the board/software and roughly $900 for a 1 gig (8-10 min of animation) MICROPOLIS drive. You must use Micropolis to get the performance at this time. There are some jpeg compression artifacts which may show up if you're trying to get broadcast quality output but for many users it's not that important.
