The surface is one that has cooled and slightly shrunk. <<
The problem is that fine scratches don't appear even to be on the surface.
They are deflected by non-polarized light to appear to be off the surface, and
in fact, out of focus. So you can never see the fine scrateches at that
magnification in non-polarized light, and probalby not at that magnification at
all . The scrateches appear to be a gloss or shinyness at that level
