DJ, Yes, I'm sure about stripping the high bit – that is only in effect when the data is being displayed. It does not affect downloads, which are done with the full 8 data bits. Autopilot, which was written specifically for Compuserve, knows exactly when it has to internally strip the high bit for display and handles it automatically. Other, more general-purpose programs, do not have this intelligence built in, so we have to help them a bit. – BobR
