#OS3.1
OS3.1 Instalation Report
On Thursday Sept 8 I recieved my OS3.1 upgrade kit from Expert
Services. I installed it that night. The operation on my A3000 went ok
with but a few hitches. First, my machine has a ROM tower and the tech at
Expert Services said to install the ROM's in the same sockets which the
old ROM 0 and ROM 1 were located in. Well when I removed the tower I
discovered that the rom sockets were labelled the same as the aux sockets
on the mother board. Namely, U180 and U181. These are the sockets that one
must install the new ROM's. I first installed ROM 1 in socket U180 then
ROM 2 in socket U181 on the mother board. With Amy all back together,
execpt for the case, I pushed the switch and came up with a black screen
with the hard drive light continuosly lit. I thought that Amy was very
sick, so I shut off the power and removed the drive bays again and put the
new ROM's in the rom tower, in the proper sockets, reconnected the drives
and pushed the switch; to the same result as before. This time though I
did a cntrl/amiga/amiga reset and Amy came to live. HURRAH!! I started to
breath again. It seems that the QUANTUM PRODRIVE in my Amy is a bit to
slow on spin-up to satisfy OS3.1 kickstart and the drive would hang. When
I did the reset the drive was already spinning therefore Amy booted
properly. I wonder if I had done this before with the ROM's on the
motherboard would Amy had reset. I didn't want to tempt fate and swap the
ROM's again. Has anybody put the ROM's on the motherboard on an early
A3000 with an original rom tower and been successful? In order for Amy to
autoboot I had to use "BattMem" to change the SCSI Timeout to the long
timeout. With Amy live and well on the hardware side I proceeded to
install the software. The install disk program handled all of the
installation with no snags. I renamed my SYSTEM2.1 partition to SYSTEM3.1.
and modified my various programs for the change OS3.1 seemed to need it's
new home named properly. I am still exploring the new OS, but here are
some initial observations.
1.) I don't like the new palette format, it messed up some of my WB
backdrops. The new Workbench will only show up to 8 colors and I miss
my 16 color WB. Anybody know a way around this. The sceenmode will
allow up to 16 colors.
2.) WBPattern prefs does not do as nice a job as NickPrefs did for OS2.x
in displaying WB backdrop pixs. It also does not recognise OS2.x
pattern presets. NickPrefs will not work with OS3.1.
3.) Pointer prefs will not recognise OS2.x pointer presets.
4.) I recovered 500K fast memory previously occupied by kickstart.
5.) I haven't run into any application problems yet.
I appreciate any and all comments.
