A computer system has great searching/cross referencing abilities. But detailed visuals just aren't possible. There are a number of resolution issues: The color depth, the image size, and the 'dots per inch.' Details eventually come down to dots per inch. No mass market screen that I'm aware of has greater than 92 dots per inch. I've seen reports that there exist in research labs LCD displays that approach 300 dots per inch. But printed page can easily be 1,000 dots per inch, and it's not unheard of for high quality printing to involve more than 2,000 dots per inch. Paper based systems, books, can contain vastly more visual information than screens. For image appreciation, or differentiating between closely related images, a good quality book beats a screen hands down. … Mark
