Dan, Both Japan and mainland China are frequent victims of earthquakes. China had a 7.5 magnitude quake in Liaoning Province in 1975 that is noteworthy mainly because it was the first to be predicted accurately, and an evacuation before the quake resulted in very few casualties. A 7.6 quake in 1976 in Tangshan, China, was not predicted and caused an estimated 650,000 deaths. Japan has seen several major quakes in this century, including one in Tokyo in 1923 that's estimated at 8.2 magnitude and killed 150,000. Another occurred in the Tokai area (the south-central coastal area) in December 1944, but apparently not much is known about that one because it happened amid the general chaos of wartime Japan. More than that I don't know. You'd probably have to do some research to come up with much more. Jon W.
