Bump Map Too Hi-Res?

Not sure I completely understand your problem. You say, no matter how you scale the map it still seems limited to what appears to be a highly zoomed in area… How are you scaling the map, and how are you monitoring its appearance? Are you using the Mapping Parameters settings in the Materials Editor (S button), or the Mapping commands in the command column? I recommend you first create a material with the map as a Texture map and apply it to one side of a cube at full size to first make sure that you're getting the whole thing. Then apply it to your land masses and first use the Mapping commands to scale and position it as best you can, before fine tuning the scale and position with the Mapping Parameter settings. Once you've got the Texture map working, copy it into the Bump map slot and try it out. (Before going through all this, you might first simply look in the Mapping Parameters settins for your current Bump Map material and make sure the Scale hasn't been turned up. Also check to make sure that the Tile settings haven't been increased in the Mapping commands. – Jack
