Ha! Steve, you found a feature in the BJ/BJC driver when set to Extended Emulation. Yes, you can print text in Extended Emulation as long as you don't print graphics. Once you print graphics, the driver will not allow you to print text anymore. You can print text after graphics again once the driver has been flushed out of memory. You can do this by using the shell command "AVAIL FLUSH". Another method is to start CanonPref and immeaditly quit by clicking on "USE" (or use the "USE" Tooltype in order to get a program that simply flushes the driver without poping up a window). And this is also the main rason why the manual warns people from changing driver settings while printing. In this case the driver might not get flushed as it is in use. And the next time you print might not work right. Even if you do make that mistake, the driver usual does handle it right… but there are some cases where a user fault might make things go wrong. Steve, in your case there is another item to discuss: MultiView, DOpus, ProWrite(?) print using the printers text mode. If you use the PageStream driver that came with the CanonDisk, you don't have to worry about anything. The Canon PGS driver does use Extended Emulation. But after printing it does reset the printer back to the printer emulation defined by the printer dip switches (BJ/Epson). It also flushes the Workbench printer driver out of memory if loaded. So the mode defined in CanonPref doesn't affect the PageStream driver. However, after using the PageStream driver you can print text again with your Workbench driver in Exetended Emulation mode. So you see, in your case it doesn't matter Steve what you have defined in CanonPref. The only time you print graphics is with PGS and that doesn't affect the WB driver. Complicated to read? That's why I simply state in the manual "don't print text in extended emulation" even though often it does work…
