Robert,
two possibilities come to mind immediately. The internal drive could be, as
you say, out of alignment, although I haven't seen that, after years of abuse,
here. The second is that you have a blown 8520 chip.
If you are a cautious, or courageous, individual, you can open up your A500.
Are you cautious/courageous? <g> If so, I can provide exact directions to find
out if it is the 8520.
