On a background? A background object, or just the background? You'll need
some kind of object for those shadows to fall on, Ian.
Assuming you have such an object, I'd make sure my hotspot was correct (switch
to the spotlight view to make sure what your light is "seeing"). Then I'd make
my text a matte object and render just to check that my shadows were coming up
at all.
