Ray: I suprised no one mentioned NTSC legal colors. The "checkerboard" pattern you mentioned sounds like Luma/Chroma artifacts. These occur when the waves running down a composite line interfere with each other. Component video solves this problem by running the Lumance down one wire while the color running dow two others (Y-R and Y-B). S-video solves this problem by splitting the signal into lumance (Y) and chromance (C). The trick its to remember that Red, Green, Blue, and Black do not exist in "legal" NTSC. If you but a red circle on a black background you will get what is lovingly called chroma crawl. When you render are you using the NTSC color filtering?
