I have the complete writeup as to why opacity mapping bugs prevent it from being used as advertised (in other words, it *should* work as you describe) on-line here in one of the sections — search for SPOOL.ZIP and see — but the bottom line is that the end of the opacity map is always solid, spoiling the illusion, and it doesn't work properly with a black background (or is it a solid background — I forget). There are workarounds, but they are not elegant, and I suspect that if I really needed the effect I'd go ahead and buy PYTHON. Just to keep the record straight…
