Dave,
NT is a true 32-bit system. The 16-bit programs we all have now require some
juggling by NT to run. When I put Photoshop 3.0.4 on NT it flew. But its a
32-bit program. The 16-bit programs are only a shade faster.
I think your limitation on your speed is the video card. I've got ATI Mach 64
boards in our pentium 100s and they are fast. But we've had a LOT of trouble
with them running Premiere 4.0. I got Premiere for a great deal and like it but
its clumsy for use with the PAR. In that respect Razor is better, but Razor
doesn't have the neat filters and special effects that Premiere does. Elastic
reality is good but the transitions and fades are not presented as a thumbnail
in out version. Premiere shows exactly what you are going to get. So in general
I'm staying with Razor until Adobe gets its together.
If your thinking about changing video cards I would go to a OpenGL or GLint
card directly. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. The preview rendering will
be supported under MAX through OpenGL (I think). As an alternative, get another
Diamond card like the Viper. I can't recommend the ATI card anymore. The
drivers are just too flaky.
As to drivers under NT, so far I've had no trouble. Glad you told me about the
Turtle Beach drivers. I'm using the Monterrey for output to the VTR and I
hadn't installed that yet.
Send me more NT wisdom as you come across it. I just started with it this week.
Also I've been looking for OpenGL screensavers and routines and can't find any.
Bye.
