Mark,
>> I forgot about the SGI renderer with 3DS. <<
it's been a lifesaver for us and an incredible bargain at ~$4k for unlimited
license – at least by SGI standards. Every house I know (which ain't many)
with 3ds and SGI's on a network snapped it up. We were incredibly lucky to have
the ChallengeXL to use – I wouldn't buy one just for 3ds, but since the SGI
department already had one it was like manna from nirvana <g>.
>> Also I think your probably the most knowledgeable person about both the
hardware and software that I've talked to here. Thanks for the input! <<
well, I'm happy to give input but I don't think I know that much. There's other
hardware buffs on here who know more than me about it.
>> specs coming on a few more OpenGL card sets. <<
you keep mentioning OpenGL. Do you realise that MAX will not support OpenGL? It
uses HDI (Hoops Device Interface, I think) which is entirely different. The
board would have to support that and won't automatically. Currently only
Omnicomp and maybe Elsa soon have boards to support MAX.
>> What do you think of the PVR card? <<
the output is stunning, especially at digital quality and I think you'd see
this would be evident on any type of tape (vhs or svhs). I have a PAR and a PVR
and the PVR is way better, although there's still a few problems with my PVR. I
can use it but occasionally it locks in a short loop during playback. Have to
call DPS about that. Could be anything.
