Barry, I am in the same boat as you. Just about to buy a PVR actually. From what knowledge I have gleaned, rendering to a series of .TGA files will probably give you better output quality on tape. I guess you run 3DS but it probably doesn't matter what program you use. You output your files to a series of rendered TGA's, I am not sure of the exact logistics but you either render them to the dedicated hard drive connected to the PAR or you render them and then the PAR imports them to its hard drive. Either way, the PAR ends up with a series of files held on its dedicated hard drive that it then proceeds to dump in real-time to your tape deck. Which means 30 fps for NTSC. As far as making am AVI and then having the PAR put it to tape…. I will let someone else answer that. For the PAR to get quality of output it needs quality of input. A series of TGAs is superior in quality to an AVI. They take up more hard drive space, but it is being dumped to tape anyway. Another note on HD space, direct from the spec sheet on the PVR,"How much time per gigabyte? Betacam SP quality is acheived at about 4 minutes per gig. The PVR operator is free to choose the proper quality vs. storage parameters. A single frame of video might need as little as 30 Kbytes or as much as 260 Kbytes.
