PMJI, but I've run into this alpha quirk with 32-bit tiffs as well. It may be
voodoo, but my problems almost always start after saving a tif in Photoshop
with compression on. I don't think it's so much a fault with 3DS more likely
the fact that there really isn't one single way to save out a tif. Once I've
loaded a material that's calling one of these hybrid tifs, and then reloaded a
corrected tif, I've found the materials seem to have a memory. My work around
has always been to recreate the material with the new alpha-stripped tiff. If
you want to save a file with an alpha intact, I'd suggest saving a 32-bit
targa.
