You're not using the stock 1200 power supply for that beastie are you?
That's a lot of a load to stick on the stock power brick. Try a Bigfoot
supply if they have a U.K. version… or even a 500 power supply.
I've seen similar problems with loaded 1200s. In one case, the power
supply was marginal- it would kick out periodically. Not enough to
reset the computer, but enough to spin down the drive. The "boiing'
sound could be the drive spinning down. Also, I think some of those
2.5" drives have an idle spin down, for battery saving in laptops I
guess. If it's been idle for a while, it will spin down. Then when
you go to access it, it trys to spin up. That's a heavier load on the
power supply than just running, so it will aggravate a marginal power
supply situation.
That's my thought, for what it's worth.
