I agree with you that software rental operations are probably primary resource for pirates. But the do point to a sorely needed facility in the software market. When I go into a book store I can leaf through a book I'm interested in and read a few passages in it. When I go into a car dealership I can take the car out for a test drive to see if I like it. But when I walk into a computer store intending to buy a package, I have to buy it before I can try it out! Now that – to me – is unfair business practice. What if I'm not satisfied? What if I don't like it? I should be able to try out software before I buy it. That's why software rental places have their legal justification.
