Assume the artwork prints fine directly from Illustrator? What output device
is this — an L100, by any chance? Which RIP?
If PageMaker tries to print documents the printer finds are too complex
(sometimes even on a LaserWriter Plus, though not often on a LWII), it will
jettison downloaded fonts, apparently first in imported files. I've never seen
this when the same font is used on the base page, but suspect it's possible.
As a little test, open Illustrator, set a line of plain text in the problem
typeface, save the document and place it in PageMaker, then print. If it
prints you'll at least know that it's not inherently the
Illustrator-to-PageMaker connection. If so, I'd think about the complexity of
the file.
As another test, you might try this, just to see if it's something within the
document or something about Illustrator and that document: save it as
Illustrator 1.1, open it with FreeHand, print it just to see if all is well at
this point, then export it as an EPS, place _that_ in PageMaker (whew!), and
see if you have the same problem.
