Hal,
Faster is relative. The ratings given the beta UNIX on the 3000
were as follows in comparison to the other machines:
Machine Dhrystones Whetstones MFLOPS SPECmarks
3000 3144 1969 0.220 1.7
HP9000 58,139 10,858 1.687 10.3
Clone 25,906 5580 0.992 7.9
DEC 3100 26,086 11,601 3.518 11.1
Sun 4/20 19,867 7042 1.757 8.9
Next 24,793 4167 1.755 n/a
They also have what they call a Graphstone and Khornerstone test,
the Graphstone test obviously tests graphics, the Khornerstone is a series
of 21 tests of CPU, FPU, disk activity, etc. and these are their results:
Machine Graphstones Khornerstones
$$/Khornerstone
3000 6183 4671 $1.60
HP9000 26,118 42,753 $0.45
Clone 7120 11,933 $0.58
DEC 3100 19,520 17,500 $0.51
Sun 4/20 9137 11,459 $0.83
Next n/a 17.200 $0.58
As you can see…the 3000UX, even if twice as fast, really isn't
even in the race. It's quite obvious that the hardware capability isn't
being used by UNIX, and whoever "did that" should be ashamed of themselves.
