Part of my problem with NeXT is that it does not exactly deliver what I consider exciting about computing. Hardware-wise it does not really represent anything new. Yes, it has a DSP chip and all of that, but is that really exciting? useful? The most innovative thing about it is the interface and that is only 'remotely' interesting considering the amount of cpu horsepower required to fly it. Most UNIX gurus for some reason do not much like the Mach kernel, though I am not actually sure why. I think that it is because it is 'differenet' from what they know and love. What I find exciting are machiens that provide a high performance for least amount of dollar. Today, INHO, Commodore is the only company providing the kind of ratio that satisfies me. The fact that I have an Amiga 3000 with 5 megabytes of memory and an OS that provides me with an workstation-like environment without the hangups of workstations (namely UNIX… :-)) excites me no end. NeXT has put its dollars into bringing business software on to their machine. It is an expensive gamble on the part of NeXT. I believe Commodore does this as well, just not at the same scale, and for various reasons. The first being is that they don't have to. They always can decide to package an A500 and a joystick and be the Toys R US of computers. NeXT does not have that luxury. Further, considering the Apple heritage that Steven Jobs carries with him gives me even more reason not to like the NeXT. The latter of course is very judgemental on my part and is based on his 'efforts' at Apple. -mark= – via the Whapster!
