John, a good question.
Lately, there've been a lot of magazine articles which show some
confusion. Stereo Review has mixed up CD-I as an LD replacement.
TIME magazine recently wrote up CDTV as "Commodore's CD-I version,
but with fewer titles", more or less. Even technical magazines often
opine about consumer confusion.
Which proves columnist confusion only 🙂 The mass consumer has
always been different. They learn and decide from what they hear and
see on TV, from ads, and mostly from friends. CDTV hasn't been
widely marketed enough to sow any real confusion in the mass public's
mind, and people are familiar enough with the CD-I companies that
they won't think twice buying from them.
But I'll tell you exactly what will happen this fall <looking into my
crystal ball :->. Commodore will come out with an ad campaign
pushing CDTV/keyboard bundles, and touting the expandability of CDTV
into an Amiga…
The reaction of most of the public will be normal: "Huh, what's that?
Is it IBM compatible? No? Then why do I want it?" <crystal ball
fades to black>
sigh – kevin
