John, just my opinion, but I played with four different CD-I applications
today, of varying types (game, reference, etc), and this is NOT 'too
complicated' for ordinary folk. Watched others (regular folk shopping at
Sears) use it and they too had no difficulty using it. (One can always
comment about the quality of user interfaces in programs, but overall they
were very intuitive and useful.)
The remote on CD-I is excellent. Very easy to use (not very complicated
control – only a thumbstick + triggers, and 8 small CD control buttons.
Real simple and user friendly.
Anyway, CD-I certainly was not scaring off the 'ordinary' folk using it.
