The GIF business is quite a brou-ha-ha, and I don't think all the dust has
settled. There has been a lot of info on CIS, but it's in the graphics
developer -type forums. In short, Unisys claims a patent on a data compression
scheme, GIF uses it, and Unisys has CIS against the wall, and CIS may start
exacting a royalty from commercial products that use GIF files. Freeware is
exempt.
