The pictures in the Groliers Encyclopedia are done in a display mode that
some plain vanilla VGA cards may not support- it is a mode which IBM calls
"VGA-8" with a resolution of 360 X 480 pixels, with 256 colors. This is a
mode which is present in IBM PS/2's, but has not been used by very many
applications. IBM did not document its presence and provides little or no
BIOS level support for the mode so a lot of clone VGA cards do not support
it, especially low cost ones.
The fault is likely to be in your VGA card, not in the CD-ROM drive.
