I reserached the cost problem extensively and found a low cost solution, the BCD-5000 single frame animation controller which controls both parallel and serial decks, I then found ancient SONY SLO-383 Betamax industrial decks for about $100 each and they work great, even have Y/C 688 dub out. Bottom fishing, I know, but singleframe at less than $2,000 is still a deal! The SLO-383 (plus other 3xx Betamax decks) were mfg with the 33 pin SONY control port (same as the 3/4" 5850 and an option on the 9850 SP deck). Look around, 383's are still out there!
