Avery: I am the editor of Video Pro magazine, our mission being to guide the new video professional through the stormy seas of rapid technology change. Prior to that I wrote for computer magazines and was editor of Broadcast Management/Engineering magazine. All this intended to be brief intro to who I am and where I'm coming from. To comment on your note to Bruce Allen: if I understand your recommendation, it is that understanding the creative and business sides of the business are at least as important as possessing all the latest gear. Do I read you correctly? If so, I am in agreement because it is so easy for all of us to get caught up in our technology lust that we forget why we need the hardware in the first place – to make beautiful pictures that tell a story, whether that story is a dramatic narrative or a message that a company wants to get across. Having said that, it is important to note that technology does change the creative side (for proof just look at the way in which creative decisions have been altered by digital nonlinear editing equipment and software). It is therefore essential that we keep track of the technology, perhaps especially so when we need to deal with outside service providers. This so we know what they are trying to sell us. It doesn't mean we have to own the gear, but be aware of what's out there and how it fits in to the way we are producing video. Hope this was on track, look forward to hearing from you. Tim Wetmore
