John,
The settings I gave you (N0, S37=9, S110=0) will force a v.32
connection. (N0 says use the value of S37, S37=9 says force DCE speed to
9600, S110=0 says disable v.32bis.) Sometimes that's what you need to
use. (I don't know if the new ROMs help; I still have the 1.200c version
of the ROMs.) It may be that your friend is on a noisy line. There's a
couple of BBSs local to me that I like to call. One has a Supra, the
other a PPI. I used to get *massive* retrains with both. With the speed
locked down, I connect to the PPI with no trouble. I still have problems
with the Supra; that BBS is on a very noisy line. (Oddly, with the
settings I gave you, I get a 9600/v.32 connection to the PPI modem,
usually with v.42bis working, which is correct. With the Supra modems, I
get a 12,000bps connection (which has to be v.32bis!), and no error
correction or compression. Strangeness.)
