The way I understand it, the firmware on the drive is what actually does the
formatting. It includes the 'map' of what is reserved blocks and when you
select bad block format from the prep software, the drive attempts to 'map out
bad blocks that fail a test' and remap the reserved blocks back into the
overall mapping of useable blocks to replace the bad ones.
