Magneto Optical Drives
I realize now the first part of my long diatribe got lost by Whap! I'll
try again, because the info may be useful to some people. November 1992
MacWorld reviews 42 Magneto Optical drives beginning on page 124!
The Editors' Choice in 3-1/2 MO drives are NuDesign from MacDirect listing
at $1298, summarized as fast, inexpensive, good support, easy to use.. a
rare combo of qualities — and — Magic 128 REM/MO from MacProducts USA
listing at $1199, summarized as the cheapest and one of the fastest
tested.
Excellent tech support. This latter would be my own choice, because its
sound level is only 36.1 db as opposed to 43.1 db for the NuDesign.
The best price I heard of for the DMI is $1616. I can't tell who this is
in MacWorld, because DMI is obviously not the OEM. Miguel: The Mass
Microsystems drive is listed as a so-so, but it is not cursed or reviled.
It lists at $1799.
There is new technology in the works that will greatly enhance the speed
of these devices. This will be available in the summer of 1993, if you
can stifle yourself that long. One thing currently available, is the
Magic 128 with an Epson engine that spins at 3600 rpms! It was not
received in time for testing, but *should* somewhat enhance the already
decent access times for that drive. I'll pick this up with another
message, so I don't screw it up again. 😎
