since I'm very anti private gun ownership (being a Brit) I'll substitute another object for the gun in this example. How about of cup of tea? – in his hand that is <g>. The way I would do this is to have the man linked to a dummy and the cup of tea linked to the dummy and placed in his hand. You move the dummy to get the motion when the man is going together with his tea. When the cup of tea needs to leave the man's hand (because he's finished it now presumably) you now move the man and cup of tea seperately. If the cup is refilled and he wants to wander off again, move the cup back into his hand and then move the dummy, when they are reunited. Voila! I used this approach for a man on a horse carrying a pitch fork (both man and horse with seperate hierarchies) and all were linked to a dummy, whilst working on pre-visualization of the movie "Wolf". At various points the pitch fork, the man and the horse had to part ways. Lots of fun <g>.
