They also have Cray, Convex, DEC, Harris, HP, and a bunch of other companies to deal with in the UNIX arena. The whole real-time market is a pretty tough business to be in. I think it's going to be quite a while before NT gets any sort of stronghold in that arena. Overall, I think it'll be mighty hard to replace UNIX the way you're suggesting. It reminds me of people ten years ago saying that OSI was going to take over TCP/IP. Just never happened. As you said, the biggest problems will be that NT is only available from one vendor. Customers aren't going to wait for MS to come up with what they need… they're going to look for solutions now. And remember that UNIX isn't standing still either. It'll continue to be enhanced for quite some time.
