Just because the CPU is different doesn't mean it can't be hooked up to the same or at least similar custom chips. Of course the 68K would have to be emulated for the code itself to run, but that would only be during a transistion to native code which may be just a re-compile away. The PowerPC, or any RISC, is important because otherwise the '060 becomes the end of the road. At some future point people will agree the '060 is too slow, then where do you go? Best to have at least started on the next generation which will almost have to be RISC.
