Roy,
I know what you mean about the Toaster! There is always a small chance
that I'll have one in my future but it is unlikely. For those who chose
the Amiga due to it's other special features "Toaster Retention" can be
very annoying. However, if it weren't for the toaster it's very possible
we wouldn't have a computer to talk about except "remember the days…"
I still feel cautiously optimistic about the Amigas Future. I think the
influx of cheap systems (ie, I just bought my 3000T for $1100) will make
the environment much stronger, encouraging s/w development. Commodore
writing off all that stock was almost like a lost leader: get them into to
shop and they will stay a while. Otherwise, C= is mixed up but if they
can get over this crisis I think they MAY be stronger in the end, or we
will have to buy clones…
But if you look at it another way, all computer companies are experiencing
downturns in sales: IBM, Apple, Compaq and even DELL. They all aren't
losing money but it is a turbulent time. The problem with C= is that they
are so small that if they go under it's possible no one will try and pick
up the checkered ball.
I guess the question is if it is worth it. But basically, if a system
(any system) does what you want TODAY then you might as well stay with it
because in a couple years it will be obsolete and you will have to
purchase a new system anyway. For what I do, the Amiga is still the best
value and the best choice so I will stay around a while.
IMHO
