Thanks for the balanced response. I think I found the solution – the Amiga must be rebooted after changing the MaxTransfer parameter. The manual says nothing more than "Select the Save Changes to Drive gadget". Several pages earlier though on a different subject, it specified a reboot. So I tried that and it worked. Overall, my opinion of the Amiga (except as a host of the Video Toaster) sinks lower with each passing day. Certainly many people find it to be a useful tool – but the trouble I've had doing something as simple as installing drives just doesn't make the Amiga look very good in my eyes. I do have the FastLane installed in my machine and in retrospect agree that going with SCSI drives would have probably been the better choice. But I have never encountered a problem installing IDE drives and certainly didn't anticipate one here. One of these days I might even get an answer to the "no cold boot" problem.
