I use Composite Studio and it is quirky but good. It really shines when
teamed up with PRO FILLS as a texture generator. It has templates which
are useable but yours will be better. It comes with a hundred 24 bit
brushes which helps. Although better than Auto Paint, you will still find
yourself wondering what happened to elements on the design screen. A
learning curve that is similar to learning to always set a keyframe in
lightwave is its biggest weakness, coupled with a less than descriptive
graphic screen to compose on. Still, it teaches ol' DOGPAINT a few tricks
it should have learned long ago.
