Briefly, the RCA/Hughs DSS is a new direct view satellite system. The
programming is delivered to your home via a fixed, small (18") dish. This
is a digital system using Mpeg compression. The picture and sound quality
is excellent. It is just starting here in the US and there is a waiting
list most places that carry them. A quote I heard was "this could be the
next VCR" – talking about the potential market.
Now the bad news. Both DSS satellites are in geo-syncronous orbit, in a
position that can be seen from all of North America. They are not visible
from Europe. But I do believe that there are similar systems available
there.
