An obvious thought is a recently installed septic system, water line, utility underground or other excavation subsiding or compacting. based on a past experience, there could be an underground structure that has rotted away. My brother and sister "disappeared" into a suddenly opening chasm in the yard of an old farmhouse we lived in. The lawn had grown over very rotten boards covering a (luckily) filled in well.
