I think you are a bit premature with your proclaimation. Although the Flyer is
going through final testing as we chat here on CIS, it DOES work. I've seen it
with my own eyes and I would say that it more than qualifies as a poor man's
"Cube" or "Avid" since even with the purchase of a new computer & hard drives
it probably will deliver the same (if not better) video fidelity for less than
half the cost of any On-Line quality system currently available.
I suspect the reason your son in law's plaback deck is just that, a Playback
only model. With a patch panel, he could easily be using the record VTR for
both playback and recording with his Cube, but perhaps he occasionally requires
Dynamic Tracking (Slow Motion) which is usually not a feature supported by most
edit decks. In my particular setup, I have a Dynamic Tracking Betacam source
deck (BVW-15) and it doesn't have any record capabilities.
