<<The US Flag is in Month View – not Day View. To remove the US Flag from a day in the Month View, highlight the day with the US Flag and then click the empty box in the row of icons at the top that includes the US Flag OR select the Month menu option…and in the Day Highlights box that appears, click Work Day.>> Works like a charm. Didn't see the 'empty box' command in the manual.
