Hi Guy, I would guess the piece you were looking at was more than likely a piece of Esquel from Argentina or Imilac from Chile as those are a very plenty source (but still very rare) on the market. They are called stony-irons because of the mix of stony material and iron as the name applies, they fall less than 2% of the time. There is one other type which is called a mesosiderite an ugly version of brown with silvery metal that is though to come from a collison of two bodies. The prices on this material is higher than on ordinary meteorites (considered rare types) and the market value seems to be at $12 to $20 a gram depending on the type you buy. Making it cost just a little less to a little more than an ounce of gold. I sent off my E-mail list to you so you can see what I have to offer in that area. Yes they are very beautiful and sought after by most collectors. I have several pieces in my collection that are in the 20 to 80 gram size range. –AL
