When I was following them closer several years back, IBM was frequently taken
to task (i.e., to anti-trust court) for PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT of products. Seems
that it's thought to stifle the ability of smaller companies to compete when
the big guys promise the moon "real soon now."

Which is what inhibits vendors of _currently_ available competing products.
(But, of course, like you, I'd like that direction, too!)
