Alex, I've seen the 8520's do this sort of thing. One of the 3000's I worked on had an 8520 that literally fried- it got hot enough to burn the fingers. Another system had a flakey clock delay line- after about 4 minutes it heated up and one of the delay taps faded away… that also caused a grey screen if you tried to reboot after it failed. There are a lot of things that can cause the grey screen. For a first attempt, I suggest opening the machine up & pressing down on the socketed chips and the Zorro daughterboard.
