Rich, what is wrong with people? Simple indifference. The machine came with Windows, all the software that the corporation bought, or was preinstalled on a consumer machine, depends on Windows, so why shuck out the extra cash for OS/2? For that to happen, you'd need to have significant benefits to the average consumer or business users that overcomes the cost of the package. Having looked at the cost of OS/2, I can't see that, especially when MicroSloth comes up with an equivalent a few months later that only carries an upgrade cost, not the full cost of the initial buy. Get a super-app that only runs on OS/2 and things might change, although only in a limited way, i.e. those users that need the app will add OS/2. Without significantly increased utility, or to put it in current economic terms, enough reward to overcome the indifference of the consumer, you won't see a change. As for the eventual merger of the OS's, it may happen sooner than you think. IBM and Apple have become quite close of late and may become much closer in the near future. They are taking a bath due to the Intel/MicroSloth alliance. Simple survival dictates a merger of activities for both parties. However, I don't think it will work in the end. The corporate cultures are quite dissimiliar. Think of mixing oil and water and you come close.
