James,
I like the Kurzweil 2000s. Its a high quality keyboard with an on board
sampler. RAM can be added so that several seconds or more of
dialogue or any sounds can be sampled and keymapped. Once keymapped a sound can
be played across the whole keyboard. So its
easy to do a Bach fugue with burps and balloon squeeks. The samples can also be
edited into loops in the K2000. The setup I use
involves recording midi voices in a sequencing program (Passport Pro4) on
several channels, editing the midi information on the
computer until its perfectly synced with the animation. This requires checking
the sync by running the sequencer (in external time code
mode) under the control of the VTR which has the previously recorded time code
and animation on it. Then the sounds can be moved or adjusted to match the
animation. When its all set, the recording is done with an insert edit of the
audio only. The VTR time code drives the computer sequencer which drives the
keyboard/synthesizer which puts the signal through a mixer and on to the VTR.
If one were starting with sound or dialogue the sound track could be analyzed
to the frame and then the animation designed from this information. I havnt
done this, its much more difficult. Im not a mucisian but I found it fairly
easy set the system up and to put sound to my animations. Of course,
one of the huge advantages of midi files over wav. files is they are so small
in comparison.
good luck, Ed
