Paul: There are a number of seperate objects, but the ones that cause the problem are big enough that part of them should be shadowed and part illuminated. The other complication is that the part that glows is jacketed by a pair of coaxial quartz tubes. Splitting them would solve the shadowing problem but then I would have to deal with the seam.
