#PVR purchase questions
I am purchasing a DPS Perception Video Recorder nonlinear suite with in:sync
Speed Razor Mach 3. I have several questions that I would appreciate answers
for.
1/ Are there any new A/V drives out there (4 Gig & larger) that have a
sustained data transfer rate in excess of 5 meg/sec over the entire surface of
the drive? I understand that the Seagates & Micropolis A/V drives need to be
"short stroked" when formatting so they use only the outer portion of the drive
that can sustain the data rate required (ie. 80% of drive for 5 meg/sec). I
have heard that the IBM Ultrastar drives do 5.5 to 7.4 meg/sec over 100% of the
platters when no more than two are put on the same Fast SCSI2 controller. Does
anyone have advice on the best/fastest drives available for the PVR? What
about the Quantum Grand Prix drives?
2/ Is a Diamond Stealth graphics board or a Matrox Millennium better and should
these boards have 2 or 4 meg of ram? Can either of these boards support
virtual screens if I want to put another one in at a later date?
3/ In the Turtle Beach line of audio boards, is the Tahiti or Monterey the
better board? Do these boards have Windows NT drivers for Pentium machines?
Any suggestions of other audio boards with NT drivers for the Perception, would
be welcome.
4/ Any motherboard recommendations for single or dual chip Pentium 133 MHz?
I'll want at least 4 PCI slots.
5/ Will 32 meg of ram do for NT workstation & the Perception or should I get
more?
6/ Any recommendations for a external tower to put video hard drives in?
7/ Does anyone know if the Speed Razor software will accept RS232 time code
from the Horita TRG-50PL time code reader/generator? This unit takes linear
time code & puts it on the RS232 line. Where can I get this Horita unit, and
what does is the cost?
8/ Can anyone with a PVR, list typical rendering times for a 1 second dissolve
or an effect? Please also list OS, editing software and CPU.
