Yo' Wade:
FWIW, my CIS id changed a few months ago, your message is to my old address.
"No Ram For Bitmap" can mean that in loading the maps required to render a
scene you have already run out of RAM. You didn't even get to the point where
you'd normally see "Rendering in Progress". One possible quick fix is to
disable Texture Map Filtering as it uses an additional amount of RAM to perform
this action. Another is to avoid rescaling a background bitmap. To free up
RAM for other maps I would suggest using Raytraced Shadows as this may make the
difference in being able to render the scene (albeit slow) and getting the
error message. As long as I'm spewing, there is NO RAM savings if you change
24 bit or 32 bit maps down to 8 bit. Maps will always take up RAM with the
same formula x(in pixels) X y (in pixels) x 3 bytes. So, a 32 bit
tga at 640 x 480 will take up as much space as an 8 bit 640 x 480 .gif. These
RAM allocations are spelled out in detail in the Installation guide.
BTW, I caught some seriously cool 3D weather animations whilst in Hawaii. The
mountains and volcanoes make the fly-bys under the clouds and around the
islands pretty exciting. Your work possibly?
